Me and Oscar My name is Cheyenne Little and this is my first year in the Meadowlarks 4H group. This year I decided to do the swine project which has turned out to be a lot of fun, even the work part! My pig’s name is Oscar, he’s a Hampshire cross, and like most Hamps he is black with a white belt around the middle. When we got Oscar we were in the middle of building a new barn so we didn’t know where to put him. That’s how we ended up having a “mobile home” for him. We parked our horse trailer on our driveway where he lived for about 3 weeks! He had a huge straw bed and licksit in there, we even built him a ramp to get in and out of the trailer easier. I would walk him every day all around our house and we would sit on the front porch sharing his favorite food, strawberries, which happen to also be mine! Whenever I went outside to play basketball I would let him out too and he loved to chase after the ball. Even now that he’s in his pigpen he doesn’t know he’s a pig. He hates to get dirty and almost never gets in his mud puddle. In the mornings I let my calf and chickens out too. The calf always lies right next to his pen and the chickens actually stay in his pen all day. The chickens love to stand on him and eat any bugs that might be in his bedding. Sometimes he looks at you with his long eyelashes and it looks like he’s smiling. Oscar loves getting baths every day and going for walks around the pasture. Since he spent the first few weeks of his life in the mobile home we had a chance to form a strong bond together. The first time I saw Oscar I knew we would be good friends. I will be sad to see him go but I know he’s been a very lucky pig who led a happy and full life. Thank you for taking the time to read my letter. Since we just moved here and this is my first year doing the swine project I don’t really know many people who might be interested in buying my pig, so I’m hoping I will have at least a few people that will come down and bid at fair. Thank you for your support! Hope to see you at fair!
